I left sixth form with a qualification in sport and a dream to coach football in the USA. Unsurprisingly, that didn’t happen so I got a job in sales instead.
I started by cross-selling pet insurance, which was appropriate because I felt like a battery farmed chicken doing it. Caged by thin strips of plastic that did little to keep out the noise of the hundred-plus other salespeople I was cooped up with. Before long, I was the top performer, but I had no idea how I got there. What I did know was that I was frustrated by the whole sales process I'd been taught. It was all about the buyer, and I felt out of control. This led to so much wasted time, and so many missed opportunities. I don't want to think about what my payslip would have looked like if I was in the driving seat.
At 23, I was promoted. This time to sales trainer. Because apparently, great salespeople make great sales trainers, they don’t.

Training, practice and a lot of missteps followed. But, after years of learning about people development and a lot of hard graft, I was qualified and consistently delivering training that drove real results.
In January 2016, I found out that ‘bulbs grow and lamps glow’ I joined the electrical industry and fell in love with it. I delivered sales training and management development for an internationally recognised company across the UK and Holland before being promoted to head of training in June 2018.
Why do I love this industry?
I love that we promote from within fairly. I love that our industry helps everyone from homeowners to mega-corporations and everything in between. And above all, I love that a lad or lass with no qualifications can earn more than a Doctor, Solicitor, or even the Prime Minister- if they put the work in.
My approach is a little different to what you’re used to.
I don't do 'product knowledge'. That's what your suppliers are for. Instead, I'm totally focused on teaching your people how to sell or lead.
